Testimonials - Drew-Smith

A picture may paint a thousand words but sometimes is nice to hear what other people think in their own words. So here are just a few of my students and workshop attendees thoughts:

"Your photographic talent speaks for itself Drew, but only your pupils can speak for your talents as a tutor.

Having attended your beginners course I have nothing but praise, thank you. Your 12 week course was extremely well structured and from day 1 we were encouraged to get out and take photos away from auto using the manual settings on the camera shooting in RAW. Backed by your illustrated notes, homework and constructive feedback.

I now have the confidence and the passion to want go out and better every shot I take. Your passion and enthusiasm is infectious and the support and encouragement you have offered throughout the course has been tremendous.

The introductory session in Photoshop you incorporated into this course has been invaluable and I’m thrilled that I now have a place secured on your next Photoshop course.

I wholeheartedly recommend this course to anyone. Thank you so much for opening my eyes to the wonderful world of photography Drew!"

Carol Spencer - Nottingham

"Drew's photographic course was logically laid out and relaxed and inspiring.

His passion for photography was in everything he taught us. His welcoming and positive style really encourages you to get to grips with the all aspects of a digital SLR camera."

"Many thanks fro today's "teach in" on back button focus. I had read about this technique, but there were some aspects about which I was either uncertain or did not understand at all. Following the "classroom" session and the practical demonstration I am much happier about using this method and can appreciate what the advantages are over the more traditional focussing method.

I realise now that back button focus, if correctly used, should be by far the best setting for everyday use. I intend to give this a real go and congratulate you for getting your message across in such a practical way."

Gordon Horgarth - Nottinghamshire

"Drew Smith is a creative and imaginative highly skilled photographer, who also has an amazing ability to clearly pass on these skills to the less able student.

He creates a fun environment and one cannot fail to look forward to each and every lesson.

My personal experience was immensely rewarding that has enabled me to not only appreciate photography from a fun perspective but also to be more mindful of the world around me, thus improving my photo results.

My recommendation is to take the trip of learning with Drew to discover our best to use your equipment and how to enhance your photo taking skills. Drew is great value for money please don’t miss the experience.

David Short - Kinoulton, Nottingham.

"Drew’s visit to our Society could not have been better.

He pitched his presentation perfectly, combining the technical aspects of his photography with a range of interesting and exceptional images.

He was very generous in the way he shared his technical expertise with us and delivered his talk in a very informative way, whilst keeping us entertained with his humour and easy to listen to style."

"I signed up for Drew's 'Shoot in Manual Mode' straightaway because I wanted to know how to use my camera properly.

From start to finish, the course was informative, thorough and practical. It didn't matter our ability, Drew answered all our questions and I came away raring to go with my photography."

"Drew is an extremely talented photographer and an excellent teacher.

His enthusiasm is infectious, and can't fail to inspire you to want to learn and improve your photography. I had been on a couple of courses prior to signing up for Drew's beginners course, but I can honestly say, I learnt more in my first lesson with Drew than ever before.

Drew has a natural ability to teach in a way that helps you to understand and remember, coupled with a passion to share his knowledge, and improve and inspire his students. I am now much more confident in my own ability, am keen to continue to learn, and with Drew's help to improve my photography further.

Thanks Drew for all your help ..... So far! I look forward to the next course. For anyone considering signing up to a course with Drew, whatever your ability, DO IT - you don't know what you're missing!"

Angela Massingham, Radcliffe on Trent

"From the very first lesson Drew takes you out of your photography comfort zone and challenges you to think more about your technique and compositions.

He has that all important ability in a teacher to judge your current level of skills and knowledge and adapt his teaching style and lesson content to the learning needs of the student.

Every lesson I gain new skills and knowledge, not just about photography but about myself. He is an excellent teacher, very supportive and endlessly patient.

I cannot recommend him any more highly if you wish to improve your photography."

"Drew, Many thanks once again for standing in as an emergency speaker. It was a very well received evening of a very good speaker at a level that resonated with many in the audience. We will be inviting you back I am sure of that.

Thank you for hitting the right tone for so many of our members. Many of whom spoke to me before they left wanting more speakers like yourself as you took the time to explain the technical bits and pieces in an easy to understand and absorbing manner.

Then you explained the importance of practicing in the back garden, parks, city centre, etc. On top of that we were educated as to the behaviour of certain bird species and many in the audience have been to Bempton cliffs and Farne islands but never realised the angst the puffins suffer to feed their young."

Our members commented on your talk saying how informative and useful they found it. It was a well presented, well illustrated, interesting lecture liberally sprinkled with humour.

I am sure that everyone irrespective of experience learned something. It makes a pleasant change to have a speaker explain exactly how their shots were taken.

I can honestly recommend you as a lecturer to other photographic clubs and I hope to see you back at ours sometime soon.

Drew is extremely talented in what he does, both taking his own photos and helping others improve theirs.

My knowledge and photo quality has improved tenfold since doing a course with Drew, and I am now so much more confident in what I am doing, and it is paying off as the comments are always positive.

Drew made the course fun and enjoyable whilst still educational.

I would highly recommend him to anyone who is wanting to learn altogether or improve their skills they already have – you will not regret it!

Drew - just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thanks again for your excellent presentation last night. The combination of a high quality set of images and an enthusiastic presenter who was happy to share genuinely useful advice and guidance was exactly what we are looking for.

The reaction from our membership has been extremely positive - a number of them were even planning a "sporting" shoot in the pub last night (I think a visit to one of our local rugby teams is favourite at the moment!) Incidentally - and on a personal note - if you do run any more American Football workshops please let me know - I would definitely be interested.

Very best wishes

Drew's Sports Photography lecture at our society was one of the best we've had. His ability to share his knowledge in an informative and entertaining fashion was very much appreciated by our members.

The many wonderful images were sports orientated, but the expertise he shared with us was applicable to all genres of photography!

Drew kept the whole room enthralled throughout the evening - we didn't realise the time and I received really positive feedback from attendee's.

Drew was our opening speaker of the season and he has set the bar high! Will definitely be asking him back. A great evening - lots of practical tips and useful information as well as superb images.

I joined Drews 12 week course having done some basic lessons in using the camera and found Drew to be an inspirational teacher.

His passion for photography is infectious and is able to bring life to the theory around photography. His lesson pace is spot on allowing you time to find the answers you need, whilst providing the right amount of support, guidance and intervention when required.

Each lesson builds logically on the previous and pushes you outside your comfort zone encouraging to go further with your photography. The notes to each lesson are clear and refreshing concise.

Ive been able to put the theory into practice by attending one of the sporting events which was an opportunity to use all the knowledge especially around composition and fast moving objects into practice.

Drew's course has given me the foundation I need to start to move to being a photographer from a snapper and has enabled me to realise a creative streak that was dormant - I would highly recommend his courses.

After purchasing two DLSR cameras my partner and is started to have lessons with Drew. Right from the start of the sessions he set on the road to taking better and more interesting photo's.

He put you at ease from the start and with is knowledge and wit gave us the confidence out with our cameras and take pictures which we are proud to show friends and family.

And we has also learnt how to shoot in manual rather than on auto all the time .

Thank you, thank you so much for today. You absolutely nailed the brief and there has been a lot of very appreciative feedback already.

I think the audience was stimulated, inspired, challenged, provoked, and baffled, and I am sure there will be plenty of conversation relating back to this day for a long time to come. Thanks again, and very best wishes on behalf of the committee

Had compliments pouring in about your images, your photos have definitely been well received and is by far away the largest number of views we have had for any of BUCS flickr albums.

Drew has photographed at 3 of our sites now and we couldn’t be happier with the photos we have received, they have bought our social media and website to life!

Drew's fun and enthusiastic attitude towards photography really helped encourage everyone to be in the photos, this is a big help when people do not want their photos taken.

Drew gave us a brilliant talk on sports photography, showing us a range of powerful images from many different sports.

He backed these up with insights into how they were taken, with lots of practical tips on how to improve our sports photography. These he related to other genres as well, suggesting that taking sports photography helps all aspects of our photography to improve.

He spoke in a lively, enthusiastic way with humorous anecdotes. We were well entertained and learned a lot from listening to his ideas."
